Oklee – Larry O’Neill passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls with his loving family by his side.
Memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Oklee with Father Adam Hamness Officiating. Burial will be held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Oklee. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Larry J. O’Neill was born February 19, 1930 in Crookston, son of Owen and Peggy (Tharaldson) O’Neill. He was raised in the Oklee area and graduated from the Oklee High School in 1948.
On November 10, 1952, Larry was united in marriage to Jeanie Lussier at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks. The couple settled on the O’Neill family farm which was homesteaded in 1878. To this union 5 children were born: Leslie, Robert, Lori, Shelly and Joanie. Larry farmed the home farm his entire life, which was his true passion. In 2017, grandson Patrick and family bought their home. They built a new home in Oklee.
Larry enjoyed restoring tractors. He loved spending time with family, especially at the lake. He was an avid reader and enjoyed learning. He cherished good times with friends and loved driving fast and riding jet skis.
Larry served on the Oklee School Board, served on Chester Township Board, the Midland Coop Board, worked on the Northwest Ag Action Committee and was awarded farmer of the year in 1975.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Jeanie of Oklee, children Les (Cheryl) O’Neill of Oklee, Bob (Pam) O’Neill of Oklee, Lori (John) Melby of Oklee, Shelly (David) Rerick of Otsego, and Joanie (Dennis) Bakke of Thief River Falls; grandchildren Patrick (Jenny) O’Neill, Logan (Fiancé Abby Gerardy) O’Neill, Katie (Mark) Lorenson, Sarah (Nate) Lundeen, Angie (Todd) Knott, Suzanne O’Neill, Douglas (Corey) Melby, Tanya (John) Syvertson, Peter (Fiance Leah Haggberg) Rerick, Noah Rerick, Bella Rerick, Brooklyn Bakke and Kennedy Bakke; great-grandchildren Peyton, Owen, Quentin, Calvin O’Neill, Max, Zac, Cam Lorenson, Ty, Mya and Whitney Lundeen, Baylee, Jackson and Allie Knott, Mya and Everly Melby, Jude and Nora Syvertson: several nieces and nephews, and Mark Spong, friend and longtime employee.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Owen and Peggy O’Neill, brother Mack O’Neill and sister Donna Burrell.
