Grand Forks, ND – Gary Boman of Grand Forks, ND, previously of Thief River Falls, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at his residence in Grand Forks, ND.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m in Calvary Lutheran Church in St. Hilaire with Reverend Frank Ehling Officiating. Burial will be held later in the spring at Community Cemetery near St. Hilaire.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls and also one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Gary Allen Boman was born January 5, 1944 at Thief River Falls, son of Clark and Christine (Nerhus) Boman. He was raised in St. Hilaire where he attended school; he also attended school in Warren where he graduated. He entered the US Navy and served until his honorable discharge.
Gary returned to St. Hilaire and was united in marriage to Donna Helgeland on November 27, 1965 at Thief River Falls. To this union 3 children were born: Sheri, Tracy and Kyle. The couple made their home in St. Hilaire.
Gary worked most of his life as a heavy equipment operator for different companies in the area including Plummer Excavating, R.J. Zavoral and Son’s Inc., ICS Inc. and the last years at Olson Construction of Thief River Falls, semi retiring in 2008.
Gary moved into Grand Forks in 1996. He enjoyed working as a heavy equipment operator, farming and restoring old tractors, singing, playing guitar and various other instruments and dancing.
Gary was an avid auto racing fan who was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the River City Speedway. He flagged the races in Grand Forks for 20 years and various other races in the area. He traveled the entire US following the World of Outlaw races. Most of all he loved the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Thief River Falls, American Legion of East Grand Forks.
Gary is survived by his children Tracy (special friend Karl Bjorkman) Boman of Thief River Falls and Kyle Boman of Thief River Falls; mother of his children Donna Kukowski of Thief River Falls; grandchildren Ricky Paulson, Lainey Boman, Braydon Boman, Bryce Boman; great-grandson Samuel Paulson; siblings Ricky (Marena) Boman of Washington, Gordon Boman of Kentucky, Norma (Tom) Myron of Wyoming, Chester Boman of Wyoming and Garfield Boman of Wyoming; along with several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sheri, brother Billy Boman, infant sister Marsha.
