Lester V. Vigness, 89

Thief River Falls – Lester Vigness of Thief River Falls passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Oakland Park Senior Living in Thief River Falls.
Funeral service was held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls.
Lester Vernon Vigness was born October 2, 1928 son of Oscar J. and M. Josephine (Efteland) Vigness at the home of his parents in Shelly. Les began his life in Shelly starting school there until the family moved to Halstad. The family moved to Thief River Falls in February of 1931, where he attended Washington Elementary School through grade six, seventh and eighth grade at Central School, and graduating from Lincoln High School in 1947. While in high school he was captain of the football team, co-captain of the Hockey and track team. Following graduation he played amateur hockey with the Thief River Falls Thieves, semi pro with the San Bernardino Shamrocks in San Bernardino, CA.
Lester entered the US Airforce in 1950 and served at the Marshfield Airforce base at Riverside, CA and Schilling Airforce Base in Selina, KS and was honorable discharged as a staff Sargent in 1954.
On April 12, 1951 he was united in marriage to Lois Bendickson at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Thief River Falls where he worked at Northwest Medical Center as maintenance supervisor for 39 ½ years.
Lester enjoyed gardening, camping, golfing and playing Carrom. Les was very active at Zion Lutheran Church serving as president and deacon for several years. He also served on the church board and taught Sunday school. He was certified through the Bethal Series. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club in Thief River Falls.
Les is survived by his children Jon (Rhonda) Vigness of Thief River Falls, David (Patti) Vigness of Onalaska, WI, Daniel (Deb) Vigness of Viking, James (Jody) Vigness of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren Jamie Vigness of Duluth, Kimberly (Scott) Bassette of Keil, WI, Brian (Tiffany) Hoyhtya of Crookston, Bryana Vigness of Duluth; great-grandchildren Jordan and Ben Vigness, Addisyon, Ariana and Aiden Schiller; along with several nieces and nephews.
Les is preceded in death by his wife Lois in 1993, parents Oscar and Josephine, daughter Nancy Hoyhtya, granddaughter Amber Schiller, brother Clifford Vigness and infant sister Myrtle Vigness, son-in-law Emil Hoyhtya.
