Viking – Hal Anderson, 84, of Viking, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
The funeral service to celebrate Hal’s life was held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at the Viking Covenant Church. Burial followed at the Viking Cemetery.
Halward Eugene Anderson was born in Viking on January 3, 1934 to Carl and Mildred (Engen) Anderson. He went to Green Valley Elementary School through 8th grade. He graduated from Newfolden High School in 1951. Except for a brief stint in Chicago and Thief River Falls, Hal resided in Viking for the majority of his life.
Hal married Ardelle Tangquist on August 24, 1956. Together they had 3 loving daughters, Diane, Tamie and Shelly.
Following the death of his step-father Arthur Rud, Hal along with his step-brother Duane (Art) Rud and his mother operated the farm. After graduation, Hal continued on the farm for a time and then went to work in the frozen food department at Hartz Wholesale in Thief River Falls.
Hal attended McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis. Afterwards he was employed by Northwest Orient Airlines in Chicago as a transportation agent until the airline went on strike. Hal then worked for Kelly Hardware in Thief River Falls.
Hal’s electrical start came with Harwood Olson Electric. Once in the electric field, Hal went to work for Rick’s Electric out of Wahpeton. They were looking for someone to serve as foreman for construction of the Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden, and Hal was their man. Rick’s Electric became Nordick Electric. Throughout his career as an electrician, he followed construction through Minnesota and North Dakota. Hal finished his career working as head of maintenance at Hartz Warehouse.
Throughout his life Hal was very involved in his Church and Community. He served on both the School Board and the Center School Board. He was Water Supervisor for Viking for several years, and held a variety of positions in the Lions Club. Amongst many positions in the Viking Covenant Church, Hal also served as Church Chairman for many years, a position he held until his death.
Hal is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, brother Duane (Art) Rud and wife Viola, brothers-in-law Lowell Gustafson, Paul Tangquist, and Lloyd Rafteseth.
Hal is survived by his loving wife, Ardelle Anderson; daughters Diane Anderson of Brainerd and special friend Kari Frisch, Tamie (Hal) Swanson of Baxter, Shelly (Jon) Melby of Badger, son-in-law Doug Haven. Grandchildren, Nick and Kyle Haven, Randie (Nate) Blumhagen, Cam Swanson, Alexis and Morgan Melby, Sister Betty Gustafson, sisters-and brothers-in-law DeLoris Rafteseth, Dwight and Linda Tangquist, Evadell Tangquist and several nieces and nephews.
