Thief River Falls split four singles matches with Detroit Lakes and swept the doubles competition to earn a 5-2 tennis dual meet win Thursday afternoon at the Franklin Middle School courts.

“It was nice to see DL for the first time this year and just see how we compare to the entire section,” said Thief River Falls Girls Tennis Head Coach Fabian Tunberg. “DL is fairly deep all the way through but with our aggressive doubles and consistent singles play, we took care of business. I was very impressed with our single side. We all moved up a spot because Bela Nelson was out because she was on court homecoming court.”

Detroit Lakes’ wins came in the one and four singles spots. At the number one spot, Brina Smith used a third set tiebreaker to defeat Ava Yuska 4-6, 6-4, 10-7; and at the number four spot, Grace Kinney held off Bell Hamre in a tightly-contested two-setter 7-6, 6-4.

Emma Fagerstrom and Brooklyn Broadwell both won in straight sets, with Fagerstrom defeating Shelby Busker 6-1, 6-4 in the two spot; and Broadwell defeating Josey Allen 6-1, 6-0 in the number three spot.

On the doubles side, the Prowlers won all three matches in straight sets. Hailey Kvick/Khloe Lund defeated Emily Skjonsberg/Mary Nelmark, 6-1, 6-3; Brea Prickett/Brooklyn Brouse topped Chloe Will/Makenna Duncan 6-2, 6-2; and Breanna Wienen/Hannah Magnusson defeated Mercedez Bellanger/Lauryn Manning 6-3, 6-2.

“Our doubles play was on point and aggressive and that’s exactly what we need coming into sections in just a matter of a week and a half,” Tunberg said. “We have approximately nine days until section starts and we have a few things to smooth out, so we’re fully prepared for section run. Just like alumni have told us before, the hay is in our barn.”
