It was a tale of two games and two much different opponents last week for the Thief River Falls girls hockey team.
The Prowlers hosted Bemidji at Cardin-Hunt Arena in Red Lake Falls Thursday night and suffered a 5-0 shutout loss. Two days later, the Prowlers were back in action with a home game in their more familiar rink, the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, and they took care of business with a 14-0 shutout win over the International Falls Broncos.
Bemidji got off to a fast start Thursday night with a trio of first period goals. Bailey Rupp supplied the first and third goals of the period at 6:00 and 16:59 buzzer-beater, respectively, while Megan Berg scored at 9:32.
The Prowlers did not allow a goal in the second period and stayed within striking distance.
The score remained 3-0 in favor of the Lumberjacks until MaKenna Dreher found the net 18 seconds into the third period. Zoe Fayette scored at 2:59 to round out the Lumberjacks’ scoring.
Thief River Falls goaltender McKenna Carr saved 26 of the 31 shots she faced in the loss. Bemidji’s Ava Myhre was a perfect 18-for-18 in save opportunities.
The Prowlers didn’t have to wait long for a chance to right the ship when they squared off against the International Falls Broncos Saturday afternoon.
The Prowlers had 16 scoring opportunities in the opening period and they found the net five times to take a 5-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lila Dalager, Parker Olsonawski, Julia Rude, Kora Sorter and Miley Cota scored first period goals, with Kali Knutson, Marley Anderson and Olsonawski (2) earning assists.
The Prowlers did not score for the final 4:54 of the opening period and the drought continued until Cota scored her second of the day at 4:53 of the second period. Also scoring goals in the second period for the Prowlers were Knutson and Anderson on the power play, and three even strength goals by Brynn Hennen.
Recording second period assists for the Prowlers were Addi Lindgren, Anderson, Dalager (2), Knutson (3) and Sorter.
Already leading 11-0, the Prowlers added to their lead in the third. Dalager scored her second of the game at 7:22, with Elory Mossesstad scoring a pair of goals in the final two minutes to round out the scoring.
Knutson, Camille Berra and Hennen added third period assists.
