The Thief River Falls girls track and field team will be represented by four athletes at the 2025 MSHSL Track and Field State Championships.

Kayla Peterson placed second in the 400-meter dash to qualify for the state track meet. Gwen Wojciechowski placed third in the 100-meter dash but ran the state qualifying time. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash to qualify for the state track meet. The girls 4×200 relay of Kenzie Reynolds, Kayla Peterson, Janaya Albers and Wojciechowski dropped 4.5 seconds off their season best to place third but ran the state qualifying time.

The Prowlers had three more medal stand finishes. Madelyn David had a PR in triple jump to make the podium and place seventh overall. The girls 4×100 relay of Bella Dicken, Janaya Albers, Lila Dalager and Jordyn Skjerven placed 9th overall with a PR; and the girls 4×400 relay of Reynolds, Elory Mossestad, Livia Harbott and Peterson ran a PR to place fifth overall.

Overall, the Thief River Falls girls team finished eighth in the 12-team section field.

“I cannot express how proud I am of our whole team,” said Co-Head Coach Katie Nelson. “A majority of events were PR performances on Wednesday and Saturday. We have a very tough section but our athletes put in the hard work and it paid off. A big goal of mine is to send at least one event to the state meet and this year I am sending four for the girls.

“Gwen ran very well and has been putting the work in for the last year to get her times down. She dropped her 100 time by half a second since last year and her 200 time by almost a full second. She was feeling really good in both prelims and sections and was excited about the prospect of her first state appearance. She will have a busy schedule at the state meet with the 100, 200 and anchoring the 4×2.

“Kayla also has been working for the last year to improve her times with the hopes of qualifying for state in the 400 as she missed qualifying last year by less than .30s and one place. All year she has been running well but has not had many to push her until sections. Her goal was to get under a minute, and she shattered that goal and dropped her PR by a full second. I look forward to seeing what she can accomplish at the state meet.

“Every year the 4×200 has state in the back of their minds. Our times haven’t been spectacular this year, but I had full confidence they would place high and run a PR. They exceeded my expectations by dropping 4.5 seconds and running under the state qualifying standard to advance to state. This year I have a young team overall and all four on the relay will be returning next year so you will be seeing much more of these girls.”

The Thief River Falls Boys Track and Field Team placed 11th overall, with athletes reaching the medal stand in five standard events.

William MacLean ran a PR to place fourth overall in the 400-meter dash. Everett Nelson ran a PR to place fifth overall in the 400-meter dash. Curtis Griffin ran a PR to place third overall in the 1600-meter run and he also broke the Thief River Falls school record which was set in 1983.

The boys 4×200 relay of Everett Nelson, Tallon Vorderbruggen, Jaxson Tanner and Will MacLean placed seventh overall; and the the boys 4×400 relay of Everett Nelson, Colin MacLean, Briley Olsonawski and Will MacLean took fifth overall and broke the old 4×400 school record that was set in 2007.

The Thief River Falls boys team will be represented at state in a pair of wheelchair events by seventh grader Clayton Rudi. Rudi won both the shot put and discus wheelchair events, which were contested during the Section 8AA Preliminaries on Wednesday, May 28 at Rocori High School.

The 2025 MSHSL Track and Field State Championships will be held June 10-12 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The Class AA prelims will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, with finals beginning the following morning at 9 a.m.
