Sawyer Jacobson scored the go-ahead touchdown from 13 yards out to lift Goodridge/Grygla to an 18-14 win over Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Wednesday night in Grygla. Wednesday’s game was the regular season finale for both teams.
“What an exciting game to honor parents’ night,” Wilebski said. “The Chargers football team showed their poise and took a fourth quarter lead and held on in the red zone to hold on to the victory over a very good BGMR football team. It was a total team effort winning this hard fought game going into the playoffs.”
The Chargers took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Shay Jacobson broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run. Jacobson carried on the two-point try and was stopped short of the goal line.
The Gators answered early in the second quarter with Nathan Gust hauling in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Will Foss. Foss kept the ball on the two-point try and broke the plane to put the Gators up 8-6.
The Chargers answered and went to the air in a wildcat formation, with Shay Jacobson throwing to Sawyer Jacobson for a 27-yard touchdown pass. The two-point attempt again failed and the Chargers led 12-8.
The Gators put points on the board late in the first half, with Foss again showcasing his running ability, scoring on a QB keeper from a yard out to make the score 14-12. Foss’ pass on the two-point try fell incomplete and the score remained 14-12.
Both defenses dominated the third quarter and the Gators maintained a 14-12 lead going into the final 12 minutes of the contest.
The Chargers contained the Gators’ explosive offense that features a mix of downfield passing and option plays that utilized Foss’ skillset. Sawyer Jacobson led the way with 19.5 tackles, followed by Owen Larson with 10 and Sebastian Groven with 9.5.
“Defensively, Sawyer Jacobson, Sebastian Groven and Owen Larson played lights out,” Wilebski said. “Offensively, Shay Jacobson and the Chargers’ offensive line had a great night. Also, quarterback Landon Nordby had a some key passes at crucial times to open up the Gators’ defense in the box.”
