Top seeded Thief River Falls was shutout 6-0 by second seeded Park Rapids in the Section 8AA softball north sub-section championship game Thursday night at the Multi Events Center. The win for Park Rapids leaves the Panthers just two wins away from the state tournament, while the loss means Thief River Falls will have to win four elimination games to return to the state tournament for a second consecutive season. The teams got to Thursday’s sub-section championship game by winning semifinal games earlier in the evening. Thief River Falls defeated Warroad 5-1 and Park Rapids knocked off Roseau 5-3. Both teams stranded base runners in the first inning and went down in order in the second. Alexa Rogalla drew a two-out walk for the Prowlers in the third inning but the inning ended on a Lexi Huot groundout to first. Park Rapids looked like it might break the game wide open in the fourth inning. Kendra Coborn showcased her speed with a leadoff triple. She held up at third when Kaisa Coborn reached on a fielders choice, and both Coborn sisters moved into scoring position when cleanup hitter Tara Johanning was intentionally walked. The Pathers got on the board on a two-run double by Riley Michaelson. Both Kendra and Kaisa Coborn scored on the play, but courtesy runner Kora Just was thrown out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Later in the inning, with two on and two out, Thief River Falls starter Alexa Rogalla got Lexi Hinkley-Smith to strike out to end the threat. The Prowlers, meanwhile had a hard time getting runners on base. Park Rapids starter Riley Michaelson wasn’t overpowering, with just three strikeouts, but she held the Prowlers to just five hits and one walk over seven inning. Rogalla, who pitched brilliantly in the game one win over Warroad, had nothing left in the tank by the sixth inning and she was lifted after the first two batters reached in the sixth. Rogalla’s final line was four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Huot pitched the remaining two innings for the Prowlers, allowing two runs on four hits. In game one against Warroad, the Prowlers and Warriors battled to a stalemate through the first four innings. Warroad broke through with a run in the fifth, but Thief River Falls quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to win 5-1. Up next for the Prowlers is a Section 8AA elimination game Tuesday afternoon game against Pequot Lakes at 4 p.m. in Frazee.
