Thief River Falls is getting a new basketball court at Bill LaFave Park, which is also home to the city’s beach and located near the intersection of Crocker Avenue and Taft Street. Thief River Falls defeated Grand Rapids and Erskine in online voting to have its basketball court refurbished for free, thanks to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ “Our Courts. Our Future” court refurbishment program presented by U.S. Bank.

The Bill LaFave Park basketball court will be refurbished this year at no cost to the city of Thief River Falls. The city was the North Division winner of the Timberwolves’ “Our Courts. Our Future” court refurbishment program presented by U.S. Bank. The Timberwolves made the announcement Friday morning.

Thief River Falls defeated Grand Rapids and Erskine in online voting to have its basketball court refurbished.

Other winners included Central Division – Lindbergh Elementary in Little Falls; South Division – Independence Park in Marshall; and Twin Cities – Madsen Park in Fridley.

One court from each region, four in total, will be refurbished with new all-season courts using modular sports flooring.

In an email to supporters of the project, Thief River Falls Public Works Director Mark Borseth wrote, “This happened because of your commitment and enthusiasm to keep voting and sharing the request. Thief River Falls is truly a community, and we are reminded of this in the way everyone came together to support this great project.”

The team will visit one court per month from June to September to create an NBA style court for the community to enjoy. Following the refurbishments, each city will be treated to a celebration from the team as the court officially reopens.

This is the third year of the court refurbishment program for the foundation. Last year, the Thief River Falls basketball court was also a finalist, but it was defeated by Hibbing.
