Charlottesville, VA – Carol Koenig, formerly of Audubon, died September 4, 2022 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was 80 years old.
Carol Diane Koenig was born January 28, 1942, the second of seven children to John Jacob Koenig, Jr., and Leona Ruth (Seydel) Koenig and raised on the family farm south of Audubon. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon.
Carol graduated from Audubon High School in 1960. After graduation, she began a career as a nurse in the United States Navy, first as an active-duty lieutenant from 1960-1963 and in the Naval reserves from 1963-1974. She received her nurse training at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She served as a nurse at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and later at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
After retirement due to disability, Carol cared for infants within the foster care system for several years. She was an active member of her Lutheran churches in Maryland and Virginia.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, John (1975, age 58); mother, Leona (1990, age 70); brothers, John Koenig (2000, age 58), Loren Koenig (2016, age 64) and James Koenig (2007, age 52).
She is survived by sisters, Karen (J. Scott) Baxter of Paradise, CA, Lois (Donald) Hejlik of Thief River Falls, and Lola Koenig of Washington, DC. She is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, several cousins, and uncles, Grant Seydel and Eugene Seydel.
Carol was buried next to her parents, John and Leona Koenig, at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Audubon. A graveside service was held Monday, September 19, 2022 at 1 p.m.
