Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons is selling Camp M.O.E., which is located southeast of the Thief River Falls Regional Airport in rural Thief River Falls.

After being contacted by The Times, Dakota Horizons provided the following statement, “After careful consideration, Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons will be exiting Camp M.O.E. in Thief River Falls, MN. The property decision, approved by our board of directors, aligns with our council’s Long-Range Property Plan. We strive to provide the best Girl Scout experience for our members, including Girl Scouts in Thief River Falls and surrounding communities. To do this, we continually review our strategy and evaluate our resources to determine how best to serve our members with engaging, safe and fun experiences.”

Local Girl Scout leaders were told the decision was made after Dakota Horizons evaluated usage trends and increasing deferred maintenance costs.

Jennifer Smith Hoesing, Dakota Horizons chief development officer, indicated she didn’t have a timeline as to when Dakota Horizons would sell the camp. However, local Girl Scouts leaders were told to pick up any items by Tuesday, April 30 as the organization would be unable to hold items beyond that date.

Dakota Horizons is also selling Camp Tonweya-Tiaya in Valley City, N.D., according to information provided to local Girl Scouts leaders. Dakota Horizons said it “is in discussions with the parties involved to determine if the properties will still be available to our members.”

Dakota Horizons further noted that it has been working on its Long-Range Property Plan in collaboration with Girl Scouts of the United States and input from some volunteers for the past five years.
