Mahnomen – Eleanor Bjerken, age 91, of Mahnomen, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
    Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, April 21, 2017, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mahnomen. Burial followed at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
    Eleanor Marie Bjerken was born on July 3, 1925, to Elizabeth (Flottemesch) and Benedict Walz.  She attended school in Mahnomen and Mount St. Benedict in Crookston.
    Eleanor was united in marriage to Julius O. Bjerken on September 24, 1942, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Over the years, she worked at Berge’s Clothing, Red Owl Store and later Hanson Ford Motor Co. until her retirement.  
    Eleanor was a member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Mahnomen American Legion, and served as past president of the Bejou VFW Auxiliary.
    Some of Eleanor’s hobbies included reading and baking.  She had a great love for traveling and was fortunate to see many parts of the world including, Australia, Trinidad, Panama Canal, New Zealand and Hawaii to name a few.
    Eleanor’s hands were never idle. She was an avid crocheter and also enjoyed entertaining for her loving friends and family.
    Eleanor is survived by two sons, John of Thief River Falls, and Dennis (Shirley) of Moorhead; one daughter, Deloris (Ron) Winter also of Thief River Falls; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Mullins and Thecla "Tex" Trujillo both of Casper, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Benedict; one grandson, Brian Bjerken; one great-granddaughter Abbigail Winter; six brothers: Elmer, Christopher, Louis, Aloys, Tony and Joseph; two sisters, Lucille and Florentine “Tina” and two daughters-in-law, Judy and Virginia.
