Thief River Falls – Harriet B. Philipp, 91, of Thief River Falls passed away Friday, September 13, 2024 at her home.
Harriet B. Sampson was born February 12, 1933, to Harry and Soledad “Tillie” (Miramontes) Sampson, the oldest of five girls. She was baptized and confirmed at Silver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls.
Harriet attended Sunnyside Country School until the 8th grade, then attended Lincoln High School, graduating with the class of 1950. Harriet was Homecoming attendant her sophomore, junior and senior years at Lincoln High School.
On June 25, 1950, Harriet married Harry Philipp. To this union five boys were born, Roger, Dean, Scott, Jeffrey and Darren. Harriet thought for sure the last one was going to be a girl.
Harriet worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 25 years as an operator and later as an administrative clerk. After the Thief River Falls office closed, she worked in Minneapolis from 1981-1984, for AT&T. For many years, Harriet owned and operated a residential rental business.
Harriet and Harry farmed east of Thief River Falls and continued to live on their farm for the past 73 years. She also assisted Harry with Philipp Aerial spray business as a flagger.
Harriet was very proud of her boys and grandchildren and their accomplishments. She loved a good garage sale, had a beautiful garden, made wonderful cookies and cinnamon rolls and always made the Christmas Day a special holiday for the family.
Harriet is survived by her five sons, Roger (Jacquelyn), Dean, Scott (Kim) all of Thief River Falls, Jeffrey (Melissa) of Horace, ND, and Darren (Georgette) Philipp of Thief River Falls; grandchildren, Ryan (Natacha) Philipp, Jami (Allen) Bolar, Robby (Brittney) Philipp, Sara (Kyle) Beger, Beth (Jared) Peterick, Harrison, Corbin, & Marissa Philipp, and Dalton & Dylan Philipp; bonus grandchildren, Dallas & Barret Germundson; and many great grandchildren; sisters, Arlene (David Mueller) of Minnetonka and Holly (Jim) Drouillard of Trail; and many nieces, nephews, brothers & sisters-in-law.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry in 2000; parents; sisters, Geradine “Geri” Sollom and Darlene Duchamp; father & mother-in-law, John & Sarah Philipp and many brothers & sisters-in-law.
The funeral service to celebrate Harriet’s life will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Burial will follow at light luncheon at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Memorials are suggested to Silver Creek Lutheran Church or Zion Lutheran Church.
