Thief River Falls – Harlan Halvorson of Thief River Falls, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at North Star Manor in Warren.
Harlan Halvorson was born on May 27, 1945, in Thief River Falls, the son of the late Morris and Hannah (Hellquist) Halvorson. He was raised in Viking, and was the youngest of nine siblings. He attended school in Newfolden, graduating with the Class of 1963. He was an avid football player.
On December 27, 1963, Harlan was united in marriage to Carol Hall at Rindal Lutheran Church. They made their home in Warroad, after their son, Jeff was born in 1964. Harlan worked as a custodian at the school in Warroad. After a few years, they moved back to Thief River Falls where their daughter Janine was born in 1968.
In 1976, Carol and Harlan had a new house built on County Road 62 where Harlan perfected his woodworking skills, right outside of Thief River Falls, where they spent their remaining years together. He was employed at Northern Woodwork in Thief River Falls for 40+ years.
Harlan enjoyed hunting, fishing, large family gatherings and having the grandchildren singing and playing their musical instruments. He was an active member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and Our Saviour’s Christian Academy in Thief River Falls.
Harlan is survived by his loving children, Jeff (Audrey) Halvorson and Janine (Halvorson) Nelson; grandchildren, Jordan Nelson, Jake Nelson, Jesse Nelson, Ashley Heller, and Josh Halvorson; great-grandson, Rowan Nelson; siblings, Harris “Gene” (RaeAnn) Halvorson, Lowell (Char) Halvorson, Carol Legg; sister-in-law, Darlene Halvorson; brother-in-law, David (Dee) Hall; and several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Harlan is preceded in death by his wife, Carol; parents, Morris and Hannah; grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Halvorson; siblings, Olive Ann (Shel), James (Dorothy), Rodney (Vi), Kenny, Roy (Evie), Richard, and Charles.
The funeral service for Harlan was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Reverend Alex Amiot officiated.
Burial was held at Rindal Church Cemetery in rural Viking.
Visitation was held on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
