Darren C. Eide, age 48, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with appendix cancer. Anyone who met Darren quickly noticed his warmth and genuine kindness—he had a way of making people feel at ease and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Darren was born in Thief River Falls, which explains his love for hockey and Arctic Cat. As a kid the only time Darren was indoors was when it was dark. His dad often brought home snowmobile test models, and Darren and his siblings would eagerly take them out, riding through the neighborhood with friends. Darren also enjoyed time with his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and earned the nickname “Gubs.”
Darren moved to Chisago, MN for Middle and High School. Darren enjoyed playing high school hockey and even got the chance to play in Russia. He often talked of the adventurous Boundary Waters trip with classmates. He graduated in 1996 from Chisago High School and spent time at St. Cloud State before getting his bachelor’s degree from Rasmussen College. During his college time, Darren enjoyed working part-time at Arctic Cat as a field tester and in the parts department which gave him the ability to spend time with his dad and learn more about his dad’s passion for snowmobiles.
Darren built a career in the airline industry, working at Mesaba and Northwest, where he formed lasting friendships. He worked in the Twin Cities and then moved to Duluth and Hibbing. After Northwest merged with Delta, Darren changed careers to the automotive industry for several years at Roush in Bemidji. His love for the airlines brought him back in 2019 with a position at Sun Country Airlines.
Darren had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. Summers were spent at Lake Movil in Bemidji, creating memories with family and friends. He took special pride in teaching his niece Ivy and nephew Ian how to kneeboard, and he shared his love of the water with cousins and family alike, always making sure everyone felt included and had fun. Winters took him wherever the snow was best for snowmobiling—one of his greatest joys. Fall was hunting time including deer in Thief Lake and grouse in FourTown. Bird camp and deer camp with his dad, cousins, brother and friends were the highlights of Darren’s year.
Darren loved traveling. He was working on getting to all 50 states and only had a handful left. One of his favorite activities while traveling was fishing. His best day fishing was in St. Thomas with his dad when they caught a trophy marlin. It didn’t matter if it was a marlin, halibut in Alaska or a walleye in Lake of the Woods – Darren loved being in a boat.
After years of living the bachelor life, Darren found great happiness in marrying Chrissy. He took immense pride in becoming a stepfather to Emma and Cora, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Darren was a great “dance and volleyball” dad, carrying around all the sports bags and cheering for the girls. He also enjoyed watching his nephew, Ian, play hockey and gave pointers based on his playing time.
The running joke was that Darren married Chrissy for her brother-in-law and friend group. Darren fit right in and became a ring leader in gatherings and travel plans for the group. The experiences created in the short seven years that Darren was part of the village were more than some people have in a lifetime.
Darren was diagnosed with cancer in May 2023. Darren faced his diagnosis head on and adopted the slogan “In it to Win it.” He had two years of chemo every other week and one major surgery in 2024. Most of the time people didn’t even know Darren had cancer, he climbed mountains both hiking and snowmobiling and lived life to fullest. In February 2026 the cancer had spread not only in the abdomen, but also in the lungs. Darren heroically fought to the end and peacefully passed to be with his dad and hunting dog.
He is survived by his wife, Chrissy; his daughters, Emma and Cora, who were the center of his world; his mother, Diane (Ed) Kaiser; mother-in-law, Lorrie Hayne; his siblings, Chris (Lulu) Eide and Trisha Finney; his step-siblings, Mike (Sonja) Kaiser, Laurie (Eric) Sund and Darian (Jacob) Hannemann; siblings-in-law, Cindy (Tim) Gustafson and Mike (Carrie) Hayne; “Funkle” to Ivy, Ian, and Troy; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Darren is preceded in death by his father, Donn Eide; his grandparents, Esther and Wilbert Eide and Leo and Alice Nissen; stepbrother, Darren (Heather) Kaiser; and half-sister, September Dawn.
Darren’s life will be celebrated with a service at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, with visitation beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Forest Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred as the family will be dedicating those with donations to furthering snowmobile trails in areas he loved and PMP Pals which provided support during his battle with cancer and supporting the family.
