Thief River Falls junior Davdine King set a new school record in the high jump during Thursday’s Twilight Meet. King, who had tied the school record of 5-feet, 2-inches two days prior in Perham, cleared 5-feet, 3-inches to win the competition and set a new school record in the process. (Photo by Scott DCamp)

The Thief River Falls boys and girls track and field teams showed off their depth with a dominant showing at their own Twilight Meet, held Thursday, April 17 at the Multi-Events Center.

The Prowler track teams combined to win 18 of the 39 contested events, with the girls team winning five of the 16 girls events.

“It was a beautiful but chilly night for our Fifth Annual Twilight Meet,” said Co-Head Coach Katie Nelson. “We started by completing the field events before running started so that we could do as many events under the stadium lights as possible. We started out strong with Davdine King winning the high jump with a school record breaking jump of 5-foot-3-inches,” Nelson said. “She also placed third in the 200 and was a vital part of the second place Sprint Medley Relay.”

The Prowlers were dominant in the girls’ 100-meter dash, with Gwen Wojciechowski leading the way with a first place finish, and Jordyn Skjerven, Bella Dicken and Kenzie Reynolds finishing fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.

“All of our 100 runners got either a season best or personal record, which is fantastic to see,” Nelson said. “We are really starting our outdoor season out strong.”

Wojciechowski added a championship in the 200.

“Gwen won both her individual events and was a part of the winning sprint medley team with Kenzie Reynolds, Janaya Albers and Kayla Peterson,” Nelson said. “During our Twilight Meet, we let the kids have fun with the relays and had several dress up in costumes and our SM relay led the way in Lorax costumes. It was great to see other teams participating in dressing up and having fun.

“Our distance medley relay (Evelyn Griffin, Kayla, Peterson, Livia Harbott, Elory Mossestad) ran well to come in second, our 4×1 relays (Bella Dicken, Jordyn Skjerven, Rhianna Smith and Miley Bruggeman, and Nora Bruggeman, Livia Thibert, Summer Hendricks and Autumn Defreece) won and placed third.”

The Thief River Falls girls team also had strong showings in the shot and discus events, with Lila Dalager placing first in the shot and fifth in the discus. Natalia Zoller placed third in the shot put and Kennedy Bakke placed sixth in the shot put and third in the discus.

“Lila Dalager won the shot put with an outdoor personal record,” Nelson said. “She has really been throwing and sprinting well this season.

“Taylor Berg competed well with a second place finish in the long jump and fifth place finish in the 200, along with being the anchor leg in the second place SMR, which was less than half a second behind first. This is her first year with us and she is earning a top spot amongst the sprinters.”

In addition to sprint medley and distance medley relays, the Twilight Meet also features mixed relays.

“The other fun relays we do are a mixed throwers relay, which they have a lot of fun with and one of our teams even used a cane as a baton. We end the night with a mixed 4×4 relay, which our kids took first and second in. The teams were pretty evenly matched and gave each other great competition,” Nelson said.

“The final highlight of the night was winning the traveling trophy for the fifth year in a row,” Nelson said. “I love watching both the boys and girls teams take the trophy and do their victory lap. It is a great way to end the night and celebrate all the great performances and how they worked together as a team to take home the win.”

TRF boys win big
The Thief River Falls boys track and field team won 11 of 21 contested events to claim the traveling trophy for the second consecutive season.

“It started out beautiful and ended rather chilly our Fifth Annual Twilight Meet, but that didn’t stop the heat from the kids’ competition,” said Co-Head Coach Nathan Hruby. “We started by completing the field events before running started so that we could do as many events under the stadium lights as possible.”

The Prowlers got two event wins in the field, with Lincoln Davis taking home first place honors in the pole vault and Carson Walseth jumping to a championship in the long jump.

“Our field events kicked off that barrage of scoring with Caleb Mauch contributing a third place in long jump and fifth place in the triple jump,” Hruby said. “Keaton Tillett added a fourth place overall in the triple jump and a runner-up finish in the pole vault. Lincoln Davis claimed the top spot in the Pole Vault. Joey Bruggeman added a pair of runner-up finishes in the discus and shot put. Following behind him was fellow thrower was Parker Kasprowicz with a third place discus and fifth place shot put finish. Rounding out our solid field event day were teammates Carson Walseth finishing first and Wyatt Nelson finishing second in the Long Jump.”

Thursday’s meet included four wheelchair events, with the Prowlers’ Clayton Rudi facing Alex Gullingsrud of Red Lake County in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races and the discus.
Gullingrud edged Rudi in the running events, but Rudi took home the championship in the discus.

“Once the running began, it seemed that there was no stopping the boys,” Hruby said. “We replaced the normal 4×800-meter relay and 4×200-meter relay with the Sprint Medley (100, 100, 200, 400) and Distance Medley (1200, 400, 800, 1600). The kids really enjoy this change and have fun with it by wearing goofy costumes, different batons, etc. The other change, which personally I feel is the highlight is the 4x100M throwers relay. Of those special relays, we had two first-place finishes and added a runner-up and fourth place finish.”

The team of Ian Winter, David King, Wyatt Nelson and Briley Olsonawski won the sprint medley relay and the team of Tobias Sobotta, Olsonawski, Colin MacLean and Curtis Griffin won the distance medley relay.

In mixed relays, the team of Daphne Lundberg-Cameron, Kasprowicz, Dalager and Bruggeman took second in the throwers 4×100, and the team of Peterson, Sobotta, Harbott and Olsonawski won the mixed 4×400.

Other highlights noted by Hruby were the boys taking the top spot in 6 of the 8 individual running events. Event winners included David King in the 100-meter dash. Will Smith in the 200 and 400, MacLean in the 800, Curtis Griffin in the 3200 and Ian Hruby in the 110 Hurdles.

“Overall this was a huge team win for the boys,” Hruby said. “The icing on the cake was watching them take their victory lap along with the girls, hoisting the team trophies. The boys are building momentum into another fun upcoming week with the Frozen 5 in Crookston, and then the Fargo Elite Meet on Friday at NDSU. We are hoping to have a bus full of athletes who qualify for that meet.”
